Approach
Engagement leads to retention.
Your audience might benefit from more confidence in their communication abilities. Or more capable and informed in their work. Perhaps, more prepared to move to the next level in their career or personal life.
Practical and impactful
My approach, developed over many years in business and through professional training, is focused on practical and impactful learning. Making sessions meaningful and useful means tailoring them to the audience and ensuring engagement.
Meeting expectations
Adults are self-motivated and self-directed. They have a broad base of prior knowledge, and a complex web of work and personal responsibilities. They expect learning to be useful and immediately applicable… and they need to know how new learning fits into their world.
Engaging folks upfront is key. I always work to set the stage early, with pre-class surveys or readings, so that participants can be situated and will know what to expect. And so they can come to class ready to be involved. I respect prior experiences by calling on participants to share relevant knowledge, and to help show how the learning topic at hand fits in.
Making it positive
I structure lesson plans to offer practical knowledge in the first instance. Background and contextual information is added in throughout the course of a learning program. But if you expect there to be active engagement and participation in a workshop or session, you need an open, positive and enjoyable learning environment. Even if you’re discussing a very dry topic!
